J. Michael Kight died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in Vallecito after a lengthy illness. He was 62.

Mr. Kight was born Nov. 8, 1947, to Jesse B. and Sarah M. (Sally) Follett Kight in Safford, Ariz. The family moved to Farmington in May 1951.

Mr. Kight attended schools in Farmington, graduating high school in 1965. He enlisted in the Army the next year and served in Vietnam. He left the service in 1968.

In civilian life, Mr. Kight worked as an instrument technician for El Paso Natural Gas Co. in Farmington and Marklyn Controls and Vinson Supply, both in Odessa, Texas. He also worked for a time in Cabinda in the African country of Angola.

Mr. Kight was a meticulous woodworker and he loved to bake, particularly chocolate-cherry cakes.

Kight is survived by his widow, Jan Wood Kight, whom he married Sept. 1, 2007, in Durango. He also is survived by his parents, J.B. and Sally Kight, of Farmington; daughters, Kimberly Fotis of Alexandria, Va., Dr. Amy Hooks of Las Vegas, and Kristin Kight of Midland, Texas; his first wife and friend, Deanna Walker Harris of Odessa, Texas; sister, Marsha Freidline, of Aztec, nine grandchildren; numerous aunts and uncles; as well cousins.

Services are scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009,  at Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Avenue. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www. hoodmortuary.com.
