Anti-bias training at Miller and DHS

The Prejudice Elimination Action Team from Del Alma, the Durango Educational Alliance for Multicultural Achievement, in conjunction with the Anti Defamation League, will be sponsoring its annual “A World of Difference” training for students at Durango High School on Monday and Tuesday and at Miller Middle School on Wednesday.

The two-day, anti-bias training provides students the opportunity to examine their own biases and learn how bias turns into prejudice and often discrimination. Students learn about all forms of discrimination, all the -isms: sexism, ageism, classism, racism, religious bigotry and other ways hate manifests itself.

They then turn the information they have learned into lessons they present to their peers, in an effort to create inclusive, respectful school environments. At the conclusion of last year’s program, both schools received the No Place For Hate Designation by the ADL, the first school in Southwest Colorado to receive the designation.

The No Place for Hate initiative provides educators and students with the resources to ensure that anti-bias and diversity education are an integral part of the school curriculum. Launched in schools in 2001, the popular initiative has been embraced by hundreds of campuses throughout the United States.

For more information, please call Del Alma at 382-9693.
