SCC bringing stimulus money to area

Article Last Updated; Tuesday, October 27, 2009  12:01AM

This is in response to Mike Lee’s letter (Herald, Oct. 23) about the local effects of the stimulus spending.

The Southwest Conservation Corps has agreements with the San Juan National Forest for stimulus projects that will create 236 seasonal jobs, which equates to 40 full-time jobs. The majority of the corps’ employees are from the region, and it will conduct even greater outreach to employ local people on these projects.

What’s more, the Southwest Conservation Corps will use stimulus funds to purchase additional tools and gear from local vendors, service its vehicles at local mechanics and purchase food and supplies locally.

The corps is greatly appreciative of the San Juan National Forest and the opportunity to use these stimulus resources to provide jobs to people in our community and support local businesses.
