Hesitant to call his Game 1 victory a success, Fort Lewis College women's basketball coach Mark Kellogg was more than satisfied with the eighth-ranked Skyhawks' second win of the season.
Fort Lewis, the preseason No. 8 in Division II basketball, defeated Western Oregon 85-52 on Saturday night in its second of three games at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
FLC led 41-18 at halftime.
"That was a little bit more of what I was expecting," Kellogg said.
Fort Lewis, which finished last season a program-best 28-4, defeated San Francisco State 89-74 on Friday in the first game of the tournament, the Skyhawks' season opener. They allowed a team to score more than 70 points just twice last season, both losses.
"They're leading scorer, the conference's leading scorer last season, we held her to zero points and six turnovers," Kellogg said of Western Oregon's Katie Torland, who averaged more than 17 points per game last season.
"Audrey George just put the clamps down." George is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
"We played some zone, too, but they just couldn't get any shots off. We were so active in our three-quarters press." Fort Lewis forced 30 turnovers, and the Skyhawks won the rebound battle by 10.
"They just couldn't get into their offense," Kellogg said.
Dana Schreibvogel came off the Skyhawks' bench to score a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Allison Rosel had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Mary Rose Paiz came off the bench for 13 points and six rebounds.
George, who "was just really, really good" Saturday night, Kellogg said, scored 13 points.
Fort Lewis (2-0) will finish its tournament with a noon game today against Southern Indiana.
