FLC freshman forward Torrey Larson scores the second of two goals, volleying a deflection from a Hayley Hollenga shot across goal for a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute. The game was the last of the regular season for the Skyhawks, who now travel to Denver for the RMAC Tournament.
Larson scores her second goal of the match after beating a series of CSU-Pueblo defenders in the penalty box Sunday at Dirks Field.
In its final game of the regular season, the No. 12 Fort Lewis College women's soccer team stuck to its season-long formula, controlling possession for most of the game and scoring late as opposing defenders watched with their hands on their hips.
The Skyhawks (16-2-2, 12-2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) got two goals in the span of a minute from freshman Torrey Larson to pull ahead 3-1 over CSU-Pueblo (5-13-2, 4-11-1 RMAC) on Senior Day at Dirks Field.
"They played well at times again," said FLC head coach Damian Clarke. "I was a little upset that we had to let them score to finish the game off." After a succession of chances - including multiple diving stops from Thunderwolves keeper Randi Walters and a hard volley off the post - Hayley Hollenga opened the scoring in the 28th minute.
Senior Jessica Otero sent a precisely timed through ball to freshman Elena Benavides on the right side, springing a run to the right post that drew the defense and opened up the sophomore Hollenga across goal for an easy finish.
Despite having no serious threats to that point, the Thunderwolves evened the match when Sarah Deffit collected a deflected shot in the 67th minute and made good use of her lone chance.
Then it was Larson's turn.
She reclaimed a Skyhawk lead two minutes later, dribbling past three defenders for an easy finish past a stranded keeper.
