"We let an opportunity go," Skyhawks coach Mark Kellogg said.
Arizona, a Pac-10 program in Division I women's basketball, came from behind to beat Division II Fort Lewis College 75-60 on Thursday night in an exhibition game in Tucson, Ariz.
"They got out early, by 11 or so really early in the game," Kellogg said. "We knew they'd come out excited, but we settled in." Settled in, but never played great, Kellogg said.
Fort Lewis, one of the most accurate shooting teams in the nation the last couple of seasons, shot just 26 percent from the floor in the first half and 30 percent for the game.
Fort Lewis grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, and the fifth-ranked team in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll was outrebounded by four.
"They were the biggest team I've ever seen - 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 - and they had the most athletic girl we'll see all season long," Kellogg said.
Kellogg said the game was tied at the media timeout with eight minutes to play in regulation.
"We just made some really costly turnovers," he said. "We made some really stupid turnovers that led to some really easy layups." Allison Rosel led the Skyhawks with 13 points and seven rebounds. Laura Haugen had 11 and seven.
"For not particularly playing well, it wasn't really that bad," Kellogg said.
