Keely Bemenderfer-Wren of the Basin Rodeo Team successfully ropes a calf during the breakaway roping
competition at the Colorado State High School Rodeo Finals in Lamar last weekend. Bemenderfer-Wren will
attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University next year on a rodeo scholarship.
The local high school rodeo competitors brought home a bevy of top honors, led by Karly Benzie of Bayfield, Keely Bemenderfer-Wren of Ignacio and Raesha Ray of Pagosa Springs.
The all had top times in breakaway roping. Benzie was second in average, roping her three calves in a total time of 10.34 seconds.
Bemenderfer-Wren was fourth in average. She had a total time of 19.52, including a 10-second barrier penalty.
Ray finished fifth in average at the state finals in 20.29 seconds.
In the first round, Benzie was fourth, and Bemenderfer-Wren was seventh.
Benzie was second in the second round. Ray was fourth.
All three came back in the short go-round (with the top 15 competitors in the state) to post top results.
Bemenderfer-Wren was second, Ray fourth and Benzie sixth.
In the end of season standings, Bemenderfer-Wren finished in second place. Benzie was fifth.
Ray was sixth.
Bemenderfer-Wren also competed in team roping (header), placing second in the first go-round.
The team was third in the short-go.
The team was sixth in the end-of-year results.
In goat tying, Benzie placed sixth in the first go at the state finals in a time of 8.66 seconds.
In the second go and the short go, Bemenderfer-Wren was fifth.
Benzie finished fifth in the average with Bemenderfer-Wren 10th.
In the season standings, Benzie was 10th, and Bemenderfer-Wren was 11th.
Bemenderfer-Wren also finished 10th overall at the state finals in pole bending.
Casey Luzar of Bayfield, a recent high school graduate, also competed at the state finals in Lamar.
Bemenderfer-Wren tied with teammate Tatelyn McCree of Pagosa Springs for the most points earned at the finals rodeo. They earned State Finals All Around honors for their totals.
Benzie, Ray and Bemenderfer-Wren all earned additional scholarships from the state high school rodeo association for their performances the past four years.
Bemenderfer-Wren and Benzie were named Wrangler All Star Team members. They'll attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla., on rodeo scholarships.
Ray will attend Black Hill State in Spearfish, S.D., also on a rodeo scholarships.
Bemenderfer-Wren is scheduled to compete in the National High School Finals Rodeo in breakaway roping as the reserve champion from Colorado.
The National High School Finals will be July 19-25 in Farmington, featuring more than 1,500 contestants.
