Ignacio tailback Russell Hubert finds room to run against Bayfield during the Pine River rivalry game Friday night at Ignacio High School. Bayfield, a Class 3A program, defeated 2A Ignacio 40-0 to improve its overall record to 3-0 this season.
The Wolverines' offense did the rest in a stunning 40-0 high school football victory over the previously unbeaten Bobcats on homecoming night in Ignacio.
"Our defense came in with a game plan, and we executed it," Bayfield head coach Marshall Hahn said. "We wanted to get pressure on (Ignacio quarterback Shane) Brooks. And our safeties did a good job ... covering over the top."
Linebacker Jordan Fields helped bottle up Ignacio's running game, making a score of tackles and blocking a Bobcat punt on the first series of the second half, when Bayfield led only 14-0.
"We ran a big rush," said Fields, a senior captain. "I leaped ... past the center (and guard). I stretched out and reached for where the ball was going to be, and I swatted it down," he said.
The blocked punt set up the Wolverines at the 8-yard line of the Bobcats. Two plays later, fullback Seth Posey bulled across from a yard out for his second touchdown of the game. Quarterback Ryan Terry ran across for a two-point conversion, and Bayfield extended the lead to 22-0 with 9:07 to play in the third quarter.
The Wolverines went up 28-0 after driving 74 yards in eight plays later in the third period.
Velasquez took an option pitch left and ran 19 yards, then ran an inside counter play for 22 yards in the drive. Fellow wingback Brenden Harrison ran for another 18 yards on a counter play, setting up Posey's third TD of the game, a 5-yard run with 1:38 to play in the third.
Bayfield's Cameron Grush recovered an Ignacio fumble late in the third quarter, setting up a short 15-yard scoring drive by the Wolverines.
Velasquez got the touchdown on a 5-yard run to open the fourth quarter as the Wolverines' lead swelled to 34-0.
After Ignacio's Colton Wyatt recovered a BHS fumble to stop another Wolverine drive, the Bobcats returned the favor, and Bayfield's Josh Everin recovered to set up the final score of the game.
Velasquez did the honors with a sweep down the right sideline that covered 73 yards for a touchdown with 3:25 to play.
Velasquez, a sophomore, finished with 136 yards on 10 carries (unofficially). Posey added 57 yards on 16 carries as the Wolverines put up 215 rushing yards.
Harrison, in a breakout game, also had four pass receptions for 133 yards and a touchdown for Bayfield - all in the first half. His 74-yard touchdown catch from Terry gave the Wolverines their first touchdown.
"Brenden (Harrison) had an outstanding first quarter. Aaron Velasquez had a ... strong fourth quarter. And Seth Posey was steady for the whole game," Hahn said as the Wolverines improved to 3-0.
The BHS defense, meanwhile, shut down the power running game of Ignacio's Russell Hubert, who carried 21 times for a total of 66 yards.
Chance Wyatt, from the fullback position, added 40 yards on nine carries.
The Ignacio passing game was 8 of 17 for 71 yards.
"Our defense was phenomenal," said senior safety Taylor Swanemyr, who made a key defensive play on Ignacio's second series of the game.
Swanemyr went up high to break up a fourth-down pass intended for Ignacio's Josh Plehinger right at the goal line.
Swanemyr also praised the inspired play of Fields.
"Jordan ... he's our leader," Swanemyr said.
"They played well. Their ... defense played well," Ignacio head coach Lupe Huerta said.
"Our blocking just went south," he said, adding that the Bobcats' offensive line had been effective in their first two wins of the season. "We just were not executing very well.
"Their speed ... finally got to our kids," Huerta said, adding that he and the Bobcats were disappointed in their play in the Pine River rivalry game.
But, Huerta said, the main focus of the Ignacio football team remains the Southern Peaks League.
"This game (against Bayfield) helped jump-start us last year," Huerta said. "I hope the same thing happens again. We'll have to work hard and move forward."
Ignacio (2-1) will be idle next week. The Bobcats' next game will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 26 at Palmer Ridge in Monument.
Bayfield (3-0) will travel to Cedaredge for another nonconference game at 7 p.m. Sept. 18.
