"We kind of came out flat because of homecoming," head coach Kelley Rifilato said. "We were quiet, lacking enthusiasm. I was proud of them for battling back, though."
Senior setter Gabriella Rifilato was the exception, recording 12 kills and just two errors to go with 40 assists, six aces and five digs.
"Thank God she's on our side," Kelley Rifilato said. "She really makes things happen for our team."
Coach Rifilato said Monte Vista made good use of a powerful outside hitter, setting her on every single play of the match, but sophomore outside hitter Katherine Rifilato "dug the lights out of that girl," recording 21 of 49 total for the Wolverines.
Katherine Rifilato also had 14 kills and two aces, while junior Sierra Aten added nine kills, and freshman Jennifer Phelps had seven with just two errors and multiple blocks for points.
"She just makes me happy," coach Rifilato said of Phelps. "She really listens. This was one of her best weekends."
The Bayfield coach said senior Mikayla Moss got the Wolverines back on track after losing the first set.
"She was the reason we won that second game. She fired everybody up," coach Rifilato said.
BHS lost the first 25-17, then won the next three 25-12, 25-15 and 25-21.
"They're a good team, they come ready to play all the time," coach Rifilato said of Monte Vista.
BHS will host San Juan in its penultimate home match of the season at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
