Two strong local cross country programs once again peppered the standings with top finishers Saturday.
The Bayfield High School’s boys team took first, while the Durango High School varsity and junior varsity squads gained valuable experience at the Chicken Creek Invitational in Mancos.
The BHS boys finished with 46 points at the seven-team meet – edging Piedra Vista by a single point – with a mixed JV/varsity DHS lineup finishing fourth with 69 points.
Bayfield’s Derek Laue led all runners with a 17:42 and a first-place finish, while teammate John Cusick was third.
“Derek has established himself as a 3A state title contender,” BHS coach Pat Vaughn said after Laue’s third consecutive victory and second in a row by more than 50 seconds. “That was a very convincing win.”
Durango’s Joe Maloney crossed in fifth at 18:47, his teammate Noah Fischer was 15th in 19:25, and Bayfield’s Jacob Petrick and Zeb Cyr were 20th and 22nd, respectively.
“Those are good times on that course,” DHS head coach Mark Dutro said of the difficult Nordic track that features a one-mile climb right after the start.
Mancos won the girls team standings with 38 points, Bayfield was third with 54, and DHS accumulated 81 to wind up sixth.
Lindsey Hutchinson, a freshman from Ignacio, ran a 22:44 in her first varsity race to place seventh for DHS, 1:48 behind the winning time of 20:56 from Kirtland Central’s Amanda Kerr.
Morgen Dorsey was ninth in 23:04 for the Demons, while the Wolverines scored top-20 results from Nicole Cyr (10th), Adele Vaughn (11th), Haley Fleming (16th) and Gabby Grenier (17th).
Durango’s Sammi Jones and Koby McInnis took first and second in the JV race, while Jared Blake was third among JV boys, Chance Costello ninth and Austin Kimsey 10th.
“The teams are rounding into shape,” Vaughn said, adding that he expects both boys and girls squads to improve upon their top-10 rankings in the coaches’ Class 3A polls.
Bayfield will run next at the Cortez Invitational at 9 a.m. next Saturday. DHS will travel to Aspen for the Chris Severy Invitational at 9:30 a.m. the same day.
