The Durango Swim Club hosted teams from Aspen, Albuquerque, Bloomfield, Montrose and Parachute on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning in the third annual Honeyville Invitational.

“Overall, I was very pleased with our performances,” coach John Gadbois said in a news release to The Durango Herald.

“Our senior group, despite training more intensely than ever over the last few weeks, managed some very good times,” Gadbois said. “At this time of the year, we are generally just looking to remember how to race, yet the group was able to put up a lot of best times.”

Two members of that group, Katie Kroenig and Jesse Rubenstein, particularly impressed Gadbois by scoring fast times in the freestyle events and 200 back after a tiring week of training.

“By not making any excuses and just racing, they set the tone for the rest of the team with their efforts,” he said.

Veterans Robin Fox and Megan Cooksey led the junior group to one of its best meets. The “very explosive” Fox improved in the freestyle and backstroke races, while Cooksey had personal bests in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Newcomers Jane Zuccolillo and Catherine Dellinger had good debuts in the breaststroke and freestyle, respectively.

In the younger groups, head coach Suzanne Schieltz and staff members Ali Haaker, Alli Johnson, Kent Stottlemyer and Bobbie Hamilton have “a big group of kids that have fun every day and get better every time out,” Gadbois said.

Anne Mummery and Casey Hamilton had superlative performances over the weekend, with Tom Pannell, Stevie Delio and Lacey Hoselton among the other youngsters racking up qualifying swims for upcoming meets.

The swim club next will travel to a dual meet in Cortez on Nov. 7, with the older swimmers also going to Montrose.

Many of the swimmers will attend a meet in Austin, Texas, held in mid-January.
