This year, the Cowboys will visit Ignacio.

The Meeker Cowboys, the No. 9 seed in the 16-team Class 1A state football bracket, will play at No. 8 seed Ignacio on Saturday afternoon in the inaugural round of the state playoffs.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ignacio High School.

The Bobcats, 7-2, earned a second consecutive home game to start the playoffs with their second consecutive Southern Peaks League title. Ignacio defeated Del Norte 46-0 last weekend to clinch the Southern Peaks League crown.

Meeker, 6-2, enters the playoffs as the No. 2 team from the 1A Western Slope League.

Like Ignacio, Meeker is a recent addition to the Class 1A ranks in football after competing for many years at the 2A level.

Meeker's only losses this season came against Class 1A No. 5 seed Hotchkiss (unbeaten at 9-0) and defending Class 2A state champion Olathe (also 9-0).

Hotchkiss is scheduled to host No. 12 seed Dolores, 5-4, in the 1A state playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Meeker's victories this season came over Basalt, Roaring Fork, West Grand (Kremmling), Paonia, Rangely and Hayden.

Ignacio's only losses this season came in a nonleague rival game against Class 2A Bayfield and on the road at 2A Palmer Ridge (Monument).

Ignacio's victories came over Monte Vista, Centauri, Sargent, Lake County, Dolores, Center and Del Norte. Monte Vista and Centauri are Class 2A teams.

The Bobcats won five games in a row to finish the regular season.

The No. 1 seed in Class 1A is unbeaten Yuma, 9-0. Yuma will host No. 16 seed Crowley County (Ordway), 6-3, in the first round.

The Ignacio-Meeker winner will take on the Yuma-Crowley County winner in the second round Nov. 14.

Defending state champion Akron, 8-1, is the No. 2 seed. Akron will host Lutheran, 6-3, on Saturday.

No. 3 seed Rye, 9-0, will host No. 14 Paonia, 4-5.

No. 4 seed Limon, 8-1, will host No. 13 Wiggins, 5-4.

Burlington is the No. 6 seed at 7-2. Burlington will host regional rival Wray, 6-3, in the first round.

No. 7 seed Lyons, 8-1, will host No. 10 Byers, 6-3.

Ignacio and Meeker have developed a multi-sport rivalry in recent years. The Bobcats and Cowboys have clashed in numerous matches at the State Wrestling Tournament.

And last year at the State Basketball Tournament in Pueblo, Ignacio and Meeker played in the third-place game with the Cowboys edging the Bobcats.
