Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018 10:38 PM

Best bets for people this weekend are the San Juan Brewfest and the Animas Museum Cultural Heritage Dinner, both in Durango.

The 20th annual San Juan Brewfest will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in Buckley Park, 1250 Main Ave.

The beer festival will feature 50 local and regional breweries, with beverages from Fenceline and Big B’s cideries and liquor samples from Durango Craft Spirits.

Three live bands, food trucks and booths from Gosar Sausage, Mountain Stir Fry and Mariana’s Indonesian Cuisine will also be in the park, along with food from five local restaurants. Eolus Bar and Dining and El Moro Spirits and Tavern will offer non-alcoholic drinks, such as lemon mint fauxitos and peach melba coolers.

General admission is $35, and admission for designated drivers is $20. All attendees must be 21 years old or older, and reserved seating for designated drivers to escape the crowd will be available.

Those who attend are urged to drink plenty of water and eat food. The event is not a beer-chugging contest.

The Animas Museum will hold its annual Culinary Heritage Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The dinner, according to the Animas Museum, will deliver a gastronomic salute to the “Swinging Sixties” with long-lost dishes from Durango culinary landmarks. Participants will sample re-creations of menu items from popular spots, such as the Red Barn Bar-B-Que, Silver Spur, the Terrace at the Strater Hotel and Chez Louis.

Tickets will be at will-call for attendees.
