Earlier in the week, I was listening to one of the morning anchors of ESPN Radio talking about his golf game. It was not very flattering. No confidence builder for him, and the same goes for my game.
I have poked fun at my game many times over the past three decades. Then this anchor talks about a respected national golf sportswriter and his take on the game. This writer says the game of golf is an opportunity. Alright, the opportunity to be frustrated, more frustrated and mostly frustrated.
But, wait and zoom in on this thought, the game of golf is an opportunity to make the difficult shots. Whoa!
The writer is correct. You can always hit it down the middle. You can shade it left and right. You can curve it like a boomerang. But what happens when you land it in the rough, near a gopher hole and that clump of “how can it grow out here” grass that will psychologically stop your follow through like the cartoon Roadrunner hitting a brick wall? You adapt.
That hole is not there. The grass is leaning forward and not aft. You choke down and blast that shot back into the fairway and, if you are lucky enough, cozy the ball right up to the fringe with a chip and putt away from a par! Brilliant.
Now go out there and create impressive opportunities!
