Congratulations to the 2016 Navajo Trail Open-First National Bank professional winner Wil Collins of Albuquerque, who held off a rally right down to the final hole to win the 55th annual event at Hillcrest Golf Club over the weekend.
The course held up it’s reputation of having very tough greens, as only a handful of pros finished under par for the 54-hole event.
Now, let’s clarify – with tongue planted firmly in check – what really happened on the final day of the U.S. Open at Oakmont for Dustin Johnson on the fifth hole. If you look closely at his ball on the green, Johnson had nothing to do with the movement backward of the ball on address. The culprit was a pesky night crawler lurking just below the surface causing a ripple effect moving the ball. Let’s see if the governing body, in their decisive delay, can WORM their way out of this one. On to Wisconsin!
Dalton Ranch Golf ClubLater in this column, I will have the results of the Columbine Classic Duet. However, do I have a good one for you. In the past there has been the fun event a Dalton Ranch Golf Club called Three Queens and a King. This year, July 13th, the name has changed to Three Queen Bees and a Honey. This year, organizers will award a prize for the team with the best theme. Some suggestions are floating such as: Mickey and the Minnies, Jolly Green Giant and the Niblets and Hubcap and the Wheels. I want to throw in my suggestion of: Three Stoogettes and the Wise Guy! Keep this date on your calendar and get your team together.
The Choker will be played Saturday at Dalton Ranch. This event is one of the mainstays of DRGC and brings golfers from all over the Four Corners to compete.
Hillcrest Golf ClubThe Hampton Inn-Yellow Ball Challenge will be held Saturday at Hillcrest. There is $500 in added purse and a $35 entry fee. You can choose your own foursome with 100 percent handicaps used in flights. Format is rotating yellow ballscore plus scramble. Tee times begin at 9 a.m with net scoring only.
San Juan County ClubThe San Juan Open is currently underway in Farmington, and many of the pros who competed at Hillcrest last week will vie for more prize money this week.
