BAYFIELD - Taylor Swanemyr is ready to jump to the next level.
Swanemyr, a three-sport standout at Bayfield High School, signed to play football at Fort Lewis College next
I've always wanted to go to Fort Lewis and play football," said Swanemyr, who qualified for the state playoffs in
football, wrestling and track in high school.
It's really exciting," he said of a lifelong dream to extend his athletic career into college.
I've got to get bigger, and I've got to get faster," Swanemyr said of playing in the secondary against the prolific
passing teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Swanemyr, a four-time qualifier to the CHSAA Class 3A State Wrestling Championships, is bidding this spring for his
third consecutive trip to the State Track and Field Championships.
The triple jumper took first at the Ron Keller Invitational in Durango with a jump of 40-3. He was second a week
earlier at the Abel Velasquez Pine River Invitational in Bayfield.
His career best is 41-7, set last year. He's also a member of Bayfield's sprint relay teams.
I'd like to get to 43-6, the school record," Swanemyr said at his Fort Lewis signing ceremony, attended by family and
Swanemyr asked all his coaches to attend his football signing, he said, because they all contributed to his opportunity
to play college football along with his parents - Rick Swanemyr and Denise Poulton.
Coach (Herb) Stinson for all of his defense in general," Swanemyr said of the Wolverines' defensive coordinator on
the gridiron and head wrestling coach.
Coach (Marshall) Hahn, for everything. He coached the defensive backs my sophomore season," the BHS senior said of the
football head coach and assistant wrestling coach.
And coach Mick (Todd McMenimen) has been there since I was 7. In wrestling, he was there when I started," Swanemyr
said of his coaches in football, who both also coached him in the wrestling room.
Swanemyr was a two-time All-Intermountain League selection at defensive back. As a junior, he was voted the conference
defensive back of the year.
He and the Wolverines powered back into the Class 2A state playoffs this season, falling in the opening round to
eventual state champion Faith Christian.
I think Fort Lewis liked his overall athleticism," Hahn said.
Taylor is such a good athlete," he said. He's got a lot of natural ability Taylor doesn't even realize how good
of an athlete he can be."
Plus, Hahn said, Swanemyr has a passion for football and isn't afraid to work.
Wrestling instills a work ethic in you. Kids who make it through wrestling know they have to work hard," Hahn
The signing means there will be two Bayfield High School players in the RMAC next season.
Swanemyr is following Jeff Huffmyer, who is at Western State.
Fort Lewis' new coach (Cesar Rivas-Sandoval) has put a lot of emphasis on recruiting kids close to home," Hahn said.
That's exciting for our kids here (at Bayfield). They see Taylor and Jordan (Gillen) and Dillon (Lammon), and they get
excited about football," Hahn said of Swanemyr and Durango High School signees Gillen and Lammon.
I want to go to a Fort Lewis game and see kids I know on their roster," Hahn said.
