Twin Buttes, which is two miles west of Durango on U.S. Highway 160, is having its opening day site tours this weekend, offering the public some of the first views of this impressive new neighborhood.
Twin Buttes is the perfect complement to Durango. Like Durango, it has a rich history, a stream flows through it, and it is surrounded by open space for a truly active lifestyle. The natural beauty of the pine covered hillsides is enhanced by the stark contrast of the Twin Buttes. It is just two miles to historic downtown Durango, accessed by either trail or road, so restaurants, shopping and services are only minutes away.
Twin Buttes is home to 775 acres of open space, including miles of trails for mountain bike riding and hiking. Future residents will have the opportunity to reach as far as their skill, ability and stamina will take them. With 10 miles of trails, a connection to the city of Durango open space, access to Perins Peak Wildlife area and even the possibility of connecting to the Colorado Trail, it is nearly an endless trail system.
From the very beginning of its planning, Twin Buttes has been about lifestyle and sustainability. At build out, there will be 665 homes and 135 accessory dwelling units. In the first phase, the Tipple neighborhood, named after a historic mining structure, has 48 single-family lots available for immediate purchase, and homeowners who wish to put a shovel in the ground will be able to begin building immediately. These lots are south facing with views of the Twin Buttes, the meadows and the south- facing ridges.
Twin Buttes coupled with Perins has a rich history as a coal mining town. Today, you can still see some of the historic coal mine tailings, and the pathway of the original railroad spur, which was built over 100 years ago.
