Let me get this right: Divide 20 (the number of years Rory McIlroy has been on this Earth) by $1.152 million (the
payday for first place at Quail Hollow) and you get $57,600 for an annual salary since he was born.
Then throw in a course-record final round of 62, a seventh place start on the final day and get to watch the final
groups try to catch you all the while lounging in the clubhouse.
I'm in the wrong business.
I would be remiss if I did not say I was rooting for Billy Mayfair - his own Cinderella story of having to qualify for
the event, getting medalist, then surging ahead to lead going into the final round only to get humbled by someone
nearly half his age.
It just ain't fair, but that's golf, and it made for some fun watchin'. I cannot wait to see what else comes down the
pike this season.
I wanted to throw a little blurb in this week's column about the two fundraising events held at Hillcrest Golf Club
last weekend. However, results were hard, if not impossible, to come by. So all I can say is I hope to have something
to report for you next week.
I can report, with all honesty, the group finishing last, during the FLC Touchdown Football fundraiser, will be getting
No, seriously, that's the truth.
Since you have dusted off the clubs, hit the links and tried to remember those brilliant shots from last year, it's
time to face reality: You could use a refresher course. I have just the medicine to get you back in form: clinics.
Hillcrest will host a weekly clinic from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday. There will be a different theme each week, with clinics conducted by the resident PGA and LPGA professionals on staff. The cost of the weekly events is $20 per
An adult intermediate level clinic will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. each evening
May 12-14 at Hillcrest. This clinic will focus on helping golfers improve their swing technique, sharpen their short
game and teach course management ideas to help lower scores.
These are very strong points to get you to the next level in your game.
The cost of this clinic is $60 per person. And, finally, we need not leave the adult beginning golfer behind. There
will be a clinic just for you from
May 19-21. Same evening time slots apply as the above mentioned clinics with a similar cost of $60 per person.
You can sign up at the clubhouse or give Hillcrest a call at 247-1499.
The Olde Tymers Café-Two Person Scramble will be held this weekend at Hillcrest.
There is $500 in added purse money and an entry fee of $50 per person. You can choose your own partner, and there is a
maximum spread between partner's handicaps of the eight championship flights excepted. There will be gross and net
scoring, and tee times begin at
8 a.m. both days. Deadline for entry is noon Thursday.
Looking down the road at Dalton Ranch Golf Club is the Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence event May 14.
The official start of Ladies Day activities is May 19, and the Spring Four Ball Tournament is May 22-23. Check with Fal
and Pier for sign-up information at 247-8774.
I want to thank Skip and Gail for giving me a heads-up on a venue change for the annual Randango Golf Classic. When we
get closer to the Sept. 25 event (yes, a fall extravaganza), I will fill you in on all the details of the 30th annual
