The Wolverines will hit the road.
The Bayfield High School girls soccer team will open the Class 3A state playoffs on the road next week after losing its
final regular-season game 2-0 at Pagosa Springs on Friday afternoon.
With a win, the Wolverines had a chance of winning the Southwest League title and hosting a first-round playoff
match.
We will be on the road," BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. We had all week (after beating Telluride) to get back to
work, and we didn't come out with any heart."
She said the Wolverines were sluggish and spiritless, especially after missing a number of shots early in the game.
We had a lot of opportunities early," Zelinski said, adding the Wolverines shot wide or over the crossbar on numerous
occasions.
If we could have gotten an early goal, it might have been a different game," Zelinski said.
Pagosa Springs took advantage of Bayfield's missed opportunities with one goal in the opening minutes and one in the
closing minutes.
We couldn't capitalize when we needed to," Zelinski said after the Wolverines fell to 8-2-0 in conference. The
Wolverines are 9-4-0 overall, but they're still headed for the playoffs. And they still have more wins than any
previous BHS girls soccer team.
Zelinski said the Wolverines were disappointed with their performance at Pagosa Springs after a major win over league
champion Telluride a week earlier.
They (Wolverines) were pretty down," Zelinski said. But I told them we can't dwell on this game. We've got to move on
and get ready for Wednesday."
The field for the CHSAA Class 3A Girls Soccer Championships will be announced Sunday or Monday. The first-round games
will be played Wednesday.
