Carmen Small is back on a USA Cycling roster.
After being left off the team for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Small was selected Wednesday to represent the U.S. at the 2016 UCI Road World Championships to be contested Oct. 9-16 in Doha, Qatar. She will compete in the women’s elite road race and time trial. She is the defending national champion in the time trial.
Kristen Armstrong, who was selected ahead of Small for the Olympics, won her fourth consecutive gold medal in the time trial in August. Armstrong retired after the race.
Small, 36, was an automatic nomination for the world championship team.
Small is a two-time world champion in the team time trial with wins in 2013 and 2015. She placed third in 2013 in the individual time trial.
In another announcement from USA Cycling, Fort Lewis College cycling alumna Missy Erickson of Mertztown, Pennsylvania, was named to the U.S. team for the 2016 Pan American Track Championships, which will be held Oct. 5-9 in Augascalientes,
Mexico. Erickson, 26, was an automatic nomination for the women’s scratch race.
