A Durango man was rescued unscathed late Friday after he became trapped while climbing Smelter Mountain.
A team of 12 to 15 La Plata County Search and Rescue personnel helped him to the top of the mountain and to safety at about 10:30 p.m., said Butch Knowlton, head of county emergency management.
"He started up the face of the mountain and just got into an area that was extremely difficult," Knowlton said.
The man couldn't go up and couldn't go down, so he called 911, Knowlton said.
"He got up in some cliff-lined areas and kind of got marooned," Knowlton said.
The man, whose name was not available, is a Fort Lewis College student, Knowlton said. He was not injured in the incident.
