Lightning striking a power pole left 1,859 north Durango residents without power Thursday night.
Approximately 8:15 p.m., a strike in the 3300 block of East Fifth Avenue shut down La Plata Electric Associations Animas and Spring Creek substations, said LPEA spokeswoman Indiana Reed.
The electrical co-ops response was hindered by a near simultaneous strike near Bodo Industrial Park, which shut down LPEAs automated outage-management system, Reed said.
Police were directing traffic at 32nd Street and north Main Avenue.
Employees at the Best Western Mountain Shadows were using flashlights to assist occupants.
As of 10:15 p.m., LPEA crews were working to restore power. Reed said the co-op expected power to be restored to all customers by 11 p.m. Thursday.
