I was sadden to read the letter by R.D. Kinney of Ignacio (Ride the Rockies left distasteful memories, Herald, July 12). As an avid bike rider, I was embarrassed to read the actions he saw displayed by a group of riders using his property as a litter box.
Unfortunately, he is pointing fingers at the wrong biking group. This years Ride the Rockies tour passed through Durango on Wednesday, June 16. Kinney stated that the incident he witnessed took place on a Saturday a few weeks ago. Comparing the dates, one would have to assume that the culprits were not Ride the Rockies participants but locals or visitors.
Lets not slam Ride the Rockies tours. Each tour brings in considerable revenue to the host communities and contributions to local charities from The Denver Post. As a past participant in seven Ride the Rockies tours, I have many fond memories of host town celebrations throughout the state.
Regardless, if the litter box incident was caused by tour participants or individual riders, such inappropriate behavior is less than classless, and those riders should be ashamed of themselves. Such acts give all cyclists a bad rap, and let me assure you, most cyclists have class, and they act and ride accordingly.
