Durango senior center an El Pomar finalist
The Durango La Plata Senior Center has been selected as a finalist for the 2010 El Pomar Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Seniors category.
The Awards for Excellence Selection Commission has recognized the local senior center as one of the three best among all similar nonprofits in Colorado.
As a finalist, the center will receive an award of $7,500.
Health department program wins grant
Promoviendo la Salud was awarded a $74,000 grant from Caring for Colorado, a nonprofit health foundation. The grant will enable Promoviendo la Salud to continue to provide services and education to the Latino community in La Plata and Archuleta counties.
A program of San Juan Basin Health Department, Promoviendo la Salud seeks to reduce cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes among Latino adults by focusing on health promotion, early detection and disease management.

Earring-making class will be offered Tuesday
The Lavenia McCoy Public Library will offer an earring-making class from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the library meeting room at 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.
Learn how to make a pair of earrings with chains and dangles. All materials will be provided. The cost is $10 per person, payable at time of sign-up. Elizabeth Claire Baldwin of ECB Creations will teach the class.
