District Attorney Craig Westberg remained in critical condition Tuesday at a hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The chief prosecutor for Archuleta, San Juan and La Plata counties was involved in a "horrible" mountain bicycling accident and was "fighting for his life," said Kim Kitchen, assistant attorney for the 6th Judicial District.
The accident occurred last weekend somewhere in Arizona, she said. She declined to discuss specific injuries.
Lawyers who have been briefed about the situation have all shared a consistent story: That Westberg flipped over his handlebars and broke his neck. His wife, Jan Westberg, was with him and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until medics arrived.
If Westberg pulls through, he could face paralysis.
On Tuesday, he was in the intensive-care unit at Scottsdale Healthcare, said a receptionist at the hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman did not return a phone call seeking comment.
Kitchen said work colleagues were shocked by the incident and are hoping for a miracle.
Westberg's term as district attorney ends Tuesday, at which time District Attorney-elect Todd Risberg will be sworn in.
