Durango school board to meet Tuesday
The next Durango School District 9-R board meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the board room in the administration building, 201 E. 12 St.

9-R announces registration schedule
The student registration schedules for Durango School District 9-R middle and high school students are as follows:
b Escalante Middle School: Sixth-grade ice cream social at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday followed by registration and open house at 6 p.m.; seventh-grade registration and open house at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18; eighth-grade registration and open house at 7 p.m. Aug. 18.
b Miller Middle School: Sixth-grade registration from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday; seventh-grade registration from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday; eighth-grade registration from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 18.
b Durango High School: freshman registration from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday; sophomore registration from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday; junior registration from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday; senior registration from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday.
b Durango Big Picture High School at Durango High School: Freshman registration from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday; sophomore registration from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday; junior registration from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
9-R announces daily schedules
The first day of school for all Durango School District 9-R schools will be Aug. 23.
This a schedule of start and end times for each school:
One-third of each preschool and kindergarten class will attend school either Aug. 23, 24 or 25. The entire class will begin school Aug. 26. The start and dismissal times will be the same for preschool and kindergarten students as those listed below.
b Elementary schools: Animas Valley Elementary from 7:45 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:45 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Friday; Florida Mesa Elementary from 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:50 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Friday; Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary from 7:30 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. Friday; Needham Elementary from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday; Park Elementary from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday; Riverview Elementary from 7:55 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:55 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday; Sunnyside Elementary from 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:50 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Friday.

DHS announces first-day schedule
The Durango High School first day of school schedule will begin at 8:15 a.m. for incoming freshmen and new students.
All other DHS students will begin at noon. DHS buses will run three hours late in the morning on the first day of school.
Mandatory meeting for fall athletes held
A mandatory meeting for all fall athletes, parents and coaches will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 in the Durango High School gym. A meeting will follow for each individual sport and activity in various rooms.
DHS to collect participation fees
Durango High School will be collecting participation fees for athletics and activities.
Fees will apply to all athletic teams and bands, Colorguard, Colorado Mock Trial, Future Business Leaders of America, FFA, Knowledge Bowl, orchestra, ProStart, Skills USA, speech and debate.
The fee will be $50 per activity, with a cap of $100 per student and $150 per family per year. Athletes should be prepared to pay their fee when they pick up their red card. Students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. Family financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation. All fall athletes trying out for a sport must have a physical, turn in all paperwork to the athletic office, pay participation fee and get their red card before they may begin practice.
DHS announces fall sports, band practices
Durango High School fall sports and band will begin on these dates:
b Band Camp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 through today in the band room and on the front lawn. No red card is needed.
b Cheer competition team from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria.
b Cheer game team from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria.
b Varsity dance team from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday in the wrestling room.
b Junior varsity dance team from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday in the wrestling room.
b Football gear checkout at 6 p.m. Sunday at the football fieldhouse.
b Football from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Monday at the football fieldhouse.
b Boys soccer from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Riverview Elementary soccer field. Both practices are required.
b Softball 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the Fort Lewis College Aspen Softball Field. Both practices are required.
b Boys tennis from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the tennis courts.
b Volleyball from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday in the gym. Both practices are required.
b Cross-country from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at the DHS Stadium. Both practices are required.
DHS newspaper to hold garage sale
The staff of Durango High Schools newspaper, El Diablo, will hold a garage sale in the school parking lot Aug. 28 to raise money to attend a journalism conference.

Escalante announces practice schedule
Escalante Middle School will hold these practices:
b Football practice for seventh- and eighth-grade students will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday.
b Volleyball practice for seventh- and eighth-grade students will he held from 3:35 to 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Middle schools collect participation fees
Durango School District 9-R middle schools will collect a participation fee from students involved in athletics and competitive activities.
Fees will apply to all athletics and Knowledge Bowl. The fee will be $20 for the first activity and $15 for a second with a cap of $35 per student and a $50 cap per family per year.
Athletes should be prepared to pay their fee and complete all required paperwork when they begin their activity.
Miller announces practice schedules
Miller Middle School will hold these practices:
b Football will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday. The practice will be held at the same time throughout the week. When school begins, practice will follow school and run to 6 p.m.
b Volleyball will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday. The schedule for the remainder of the week will be from 3 to 5 p.m.
Escalantes volleyball season to begin
The Escalante volleyball season will begin Monday with a practice from 3:35 to 5:30 p.m.
Practice will be held all week at that time. Once school starts Aug. 23 there will only be practice and games Monday through Thursday because of early release Friday.
Girls need to come prepared with their sports physical, parent permission form and proof of insurance form.

Business donates to education group
Sam Denham, the owner of Peerless Tyre Company at 1990 Main Ave., has pledged 25 cents for every tire sold during the coming year to the Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence.
The money will support projects and programs promoting educational excellence for all Durango School District 9-R students.

Informational meeting for learning program
An informational meeting about Star OPTIONS will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today in the board room at the 9-R Central Administration Building, 215 E. 12th St.
Options offers high school-age students more educational pathways to retain, challenge and empower them. These options include the Big Picture School, online/e-Learning, GED, hands-on learning, college prep and community college classes, accelerated learning, help with math and reading, English language learner support, and day and evening classes.

FLC to hold class about mushrooms
Fort Lewis College continuing education will hold Introduction to Mushroom Identification with Dean Mullen on Aug. 18, 25 and Sept. 1 with field trips on Aug. 18 and 28 to coincide with the Telluride Mushroom Festival.
Participants will learn how to identify wild mushrooms with other avid fungiphiles. Advance registration is required.

Mountain Middle announces events
Mountain Middle School, a free public charter school of choice, will open in the fall.

Lutheran preschool accepting enrollment
St. Pauls Lutheran Preschool is accepting applications for enrollment in its preschool for the 2010-2011 school year.
