Tonight could be a historic night in Durango as the Summit hosts its first black-tie affair.
Im pretty sure weve never had one, even before I took over, said Summit owner Scottie Sindelar. And so it must be true.
The rock show features locals Black Market Electric and Youre Welcome, two hard-rock bands verging on hardcore. Fun stuff.
The event is a last-minute fundraiser for Durango Open Studios, a tour of artists homes and work spaces.
Now in its second year, DOS exploded from 18 participants last year to 41 this year, an increase that caught organizers Crystal Hartman and Katie Rankin by surprise.
I had no idea how much it added to the printing costs for maps and brochures, Hartman said.
Black tie at the Summit isnt your typical stuffy night on the town. More accurately, Hartman said its a black-bow-tie affair, and the difference will save attendees hundreds of dollars in tuxedo rentals.
You can wear a black tie, a bow in your hair or a black bow tie, and if thats all you want to wear, thats OK, she said.
Hartman and Rankin will have some bows and ties on hand for those who might be genuinely ignorant about the dress code requirements, but the idea is for people to show up with their own, and the Summit staff will strictly enforce the rules.
The evening also will feature raffles and live auctions to further pad the coffers, and the ladies will have a photographer on hand to capture everyone in his or her finery.
Durango Open Studios will take place Sept. 18 and 19, and a preview show will be held Sept. 10 at the Durango Arts Center.
