Benefit for safehouse, shelter set for Aug. 22
Michael Johnson, singer-songwriter and guitarist, will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and are available at the centers box office. All proceeds benefit the Volunteers of America Southwest Safehouse and Durango Community Shelter. Seating is limited.

Book sale to be held at Durango library
Friends of the Durango Public Library will hold an end-of-summer book sale from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Sale books will include a selection of fiction, both hardback and paperback, childrens books and paperbacks of all types. Those who buy five paperbacks will get another one free.
All proceeds go to the library for events such as the childrens summer reading program, various speakers and presentations, and special requests such as the new Mango language computer program.
Middle school to host fundraiser Thursday
A Durango family has offered to match every dollar Mountain Middle School receives from donors up to $50,000, and the school will host a party to celebrate this gift from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Crossroads Building rooftop, 1099 Main Ave. (Take the elevator to the third floor.)
Black Velvet will perform, and refreshments will be served. Board members will be available to answer questions about the schools curriculum and the charter application process. The school will accept tax-deductible donations at the event.
The middle school is a project-based public charter middle school scheduled to open in 2011.
