The Durango High School boys swim team recorded a pair of state-qualifying times in the first meet of the spring season Saturday in Grand Junction.
The Demons won the inaugural meet of the season, topping six other prep teams. The host Grand Junction-area team split into four teams (representing the four Grand Junction-area high schools).
Of the 10 relay events in the relay-meet opener, Durango won seven of the races.
Robert Stafford, Alex Schweitz, Teale Kitson and Taylor Salee teamed to record two different state relay times at the Grand Junction meet.
"We did pretty well," DHS head coach Tom Coxwell said. "This was a good relay event ... it allows us to get to know our kids and the competition."
He said the DHS freshman also stepped in and swam well for the Demons.
"Our freshmen came through. We have five freshmen on the team this year," Coxwell said.
He said the Demons finished first in the 200 medley relay, the 400 individual medley relay, the 200 fly/free relay, the 200 back/breast relay, the 500 crescendo (progressive) relay, the 200 back relay and the 400 free relay.
"So we're off to a good start," Coxwell said.
"Now, we get to take a look at the kids in individual events," he said.
The Demons will host a triangular meet with Delta and Glenwood Springs next Saturday at the Fort Lewis pool (noon).
