The Creede Miners spoiled Bayfield High School's return to prep basketball on Tuesday night.
The Miners, with a rally in the second half, knocked off the Bayfield boys 50-45 at the BHS gym.
"They've got a good team with good size," Bayfield coach Chad Nachtrieb said of the visitors from Creede.
"They've very well coached. They work the ball into the post, and they played well," Nachtrieb said.
The Wolverines started quickly in the first game after a three-week break. Bayfield led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wolverines held a similar four-point lead at halftime.
But Creede, behind the inside play of John Whitmore, pulled ahead.
"We made a good run in the fourth quarter," Nachtrieb said. "But then we had to start fouling, and they hit their free throws."
Tanner Phelps led Bayfield with 11 points.
Jesse McCoy and Jared Qualls had eight points each.
"Jared came off the bench and a had a real good game for us," Nachtrieb said.
Whitmore led all scorers with 20 points for Creede, 6-0.
Bayfield pulled down 26 rebounds.
"And we only had nine turnovers, which is much better than in the past," the Bayfield coach said.
The Wolverines, 2-5, are scheduled to host Sangre de Cristo in makeup games on Friday night (weather permitting). The girls varsity is set for a 5:30 p.m. start (approximately) with the boys varsity to follow.
