A few weeks ago, we read inTheDurango Herald about a grocery store in Pagosa Springs closing because it was not profitable. The story pointed out that the chain was not abandoning Pagosa Springs, as they operated a second store in the community.
Further on, we read where a local candidate for the state Senate suggested the store should stay open and profit should not be the motivating factor, but rather jobs and convenience.
Silly us, all this time we thought profit was the goal of commerce. One cant help but wonder who is going to put money in the bank to pay the help, buy more groceries, pay the taxes and insurance, give to charity and all those other items it takes to run a grocery store.
Aha, the government can pay for it!
No thanks. We will vote for Ellen Roberts!
