How many times must we be presented with an environmental disaster related to the use of fossil fuels before we decide as a country that enough is enough? We need to move away from them and utilize our focus and intellectual abilities to develop alternative sources of energy.
Senate Bill 3663 would:
b Improve offshore drilling management and crisis response.
b Guarantee funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, an important tool for preserving and restoring habitat in the Gulf and beyond.
b Invest in Home Star, an energy-efficiency program that lowers costs for consumers and creates jobs.
More than 5,300 birds, 550 threatened and endangered sea turtles, 80 dolphins and other marine mammals have been confirmed killed since the Gulf oil disaster began, and even more have been sickened or injured.
Up to 40 percent of the nations commercial seafood harvest comes from Gulf Coast fisheries, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
