Volunteers needed for crisis hot line
Sexual Assault Services Organization is seeking volunteers for its crisis hot line.
Hot-line advocates empower and validate survivors and provide guidance through the hospital, law enforcement and the criminal-justice system. Local experts will offer free training beginning in early October.

Volunteer needed for Planning Commission
La Plata County commissioners are seeking an individual to serve as an alternate on the Planning Commission.
The length of term is three years, and meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month in the meeting room of the La Plata County Courthouse. All positions are voluntary and training is included.

Preschool to hold groundbreaking
Bayfield Early Education Programs, the Bayfield preschool, will host a groundbreaking celebration at 4 p.m. today at 645 Fox Farm Circle.
The program has spent the last four years working on a capital campaign to build its own preschool facility. Community members are invited.
Volunteer naturalist training to be held
Durango Nature Studies will hold its fall volunteer naturalist training for its Children Discovering Nature Program from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15 and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 and 18.
Volunteer naturalists lead science-based hikes for children in kindergarten through fifth grade about topics such as plants, animals, insects and water. Volunteers will receive a manual.
Nature walks take place at the Durango Nature Center. No previous experience is necessary.

LPEA announces winter off-peak hours
La Plata Electric Association customers participating in the WattWatcher Time-of-Use program are reminded that on-peak and off-peak times adjust Sept. 15.
From Sept. 15 to May 14, the winter off-peak hours are daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and all day Thanksgiving and Christmas. Customers are encouraged to use appliances that draw the most power during the off-peak hours.
