BAYFIELD - The Bayfield High School football team followed its business plan to the letter Friday night.
The Wolverines, executing their options at all the right times, cashed in with a Gordon Gecko-like 48-0 takeover of rival Ignacio at a packed Wolverine Country Stadium.
"Our (offensive) line blocked great (Friday night," said Bayfield junior quarterback Colt Walker, who led the real estate hungry Wolverines offense with 165 yards rushing on 17 carries.
"We executed on offense. We knew we had to keep the intensity up," said Walker, who scored the Wolverines' second touchdown on a short keeper.
In the first drive to open the game, Walker led the Wolerines 60 yards in 10 plays. He tossed a perfect option pitch to Aaron Velasquez, who dashed in from 11 yards out.
Velasquez, another BHS junior, added 160 yards rushing on 10 carries as Bayfield improved to 2-0.
Junior fullback Seth Posey scored two touchdowns and contributed to Bayfield's 490 total rushing yards against the Bobcats, who fell to 0-3 against its larger-school opposition so far this regular season.
Robert Westbrook and Derek MacGuffie also had touchdowns, as did Cameron Shablo, who returned a fumble 34 yards for Bayfield's final touchdown.
With six different players scoring touchdowns, the Wolverines used three different kickers - Justis Strahan, T.J. Pazell and Max Arras, a German foreign exchange who is playing his first American football this season. He drilled two kickoffs out of the end zone.
"T.J. Pazell, again, was all over the field," BHS head coach Marshall Hahn said.
He commended both the offense and the defense.
"Anytime you can put a zero on the board, that says volumes," Hahn said.
"We were prepared for this after a hard week of practice," said senior linebacker Tanner McGhehey, the anchor of a defense that has scored a defensive touchdown two weeks in a row.
Ignacio attacked the Wolverines with Mr. Everything, senior Pedro Vigil, who had 20 carries for 88 yards. Vigil also was the Bobcats' leading tackler. Bobcats' quarterback Ryan Brooks finished the day 10 of 23 for 70 yards.
