After reading Butch and Karen Kellers letter to the editor (Herald, Sept. 5), I applaud them both. Allowing Segways the right to be on any sidewalk or path is the greenest step forward Durango could make.
As an owner of two Segways, I can tell you they are safe and are designed to be safe around people walking on the streets. If City Council members have not at least tried a Segway, shame on them. Voting with no idea or firsthand knowledge of how they work or their safety features is not in keeping with the best interests of the city of Durango.
This vote could help recognize Durango as a friendly green community. Butch and Karen are right. I, too, cant believe police officers arent using them to patrol the city.
Council members might want to ask themselves what other cities know that Durango doesnt. Calculate the amount of fuel that is used to patrol the downtown area; Im sure the Segway would be more than cost-effective.
The city should do what is green and allow Segways.
