Local artists are returning to their studios after visiting estate sales and secondhand stores to collect furniture and materials they'll use to transform everyday furniture into objects of art.
They will contribute their work to the eighth year of "Furniture as Art." The work will be auctioned to benefit radio station KDUR-FM .
The station is one of many local organizations that frequently asks artists to help raise funds. In return, they promise artists exposure for their work.
This year, 23 artists are participating. It is a first for several, including Tom Kipp and Preston Parrott, who are contributing an original skateboard and metal sculpture.
Artists' work will be on display in area businesses and galleries beginning this week. For a complete list of participating artists and a look at their work, visit www.kdur.org.
Furniture as Art 2009 will be at 5:30 p.m. March 19 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. Auctioneers Pat and Calvin Story of Treasure Auction will sell the work, and Chad and Tom MacCluskey, father and son, will play. Wine, beer and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $10 in advance at KDUR or DAC or $15 at the door.
