The national runners-up Skyhawks from a season ago were ranked 18th earlier this month in the Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25 Poll, while the championship Emporia State program will start the season ranked 23rd overall.
Fort Lewis College – men’s and women’s basketball – will have its first official practice of the 2010-11 winter season today at Whalen Gymnasium.
The FLC men’s program received top-25 “others to watch” status.
Cal Poly Pomona, the defending D-II champions which has made back-to-back title-game appearances, was ranked first overall in the preseason poll.
Findlay (Ohio), The Sporting News’ preseason No. 1, was ranked second; St. Cloud State was ranked third; Indiana (Pa.) fourth and Florida Southern fifth.
Metro State of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference was ranked 15th to start the season in the Bulletin.
The Sporting News listed Fort Lewis and Metro State as “possible breakthrough” teams in their preseason news release. It also named FLC’s DeAndre Lansdowne and Metro State’s Donte Nicholas as preseason All-American honorable mention selections.
Lansdowne, a 6-2 senior guard, averaged 21.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last year for the 19-9 Skyhawks.
Arkansas Tech was ranked first in the women’s Bulletin, while Delta State was ranked second, Tusculum third, Holy Family fourth and West Texas A&M fifth.
Eight players return from the Skyhawks’ 2009-10 record-breaking 35-4 team, which also finished 18-1 to win the RMAC. FLC loses four starters and seven players from last year’s team but returns starting point guard Abby Jackson.
Emporia State defeated FLC 65-53 in the national championship game.
The FLC men will begin its season at home with an exhibition against Northern New Mexico on Nov. 3 at Whalen Gymnasium. It will start its regular season at home with the second annual George B. Boedecker Classic Nov. 19-20. Its RMAC season will begin Dec. 3 at UC-Colorado Springs.
The FLC women will begin its season with an exhibition against Utah Valley State on Nov. 3 in Orem, Utah, then will play two more preseason games on the road against Brigham Young and Arizona State – all three are Division I women’s basketball programs.
FLC will begin its regular season against Eastern New Mexico on Nov. 13 at Whalen Gym. Its RMAC regular season also will begin Dec. 3 at UC-Colorado Springs – part of a women’s-men’s doubleheader.
