Florida Mesa to hold auction, carnival
Florida Mesa Elementary School will hold its Harvest Carnival and silent auction from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the school, 216 Colorado Highway 172.
Bidding for the silent auction will close at 7:30 p.m. There will be games, a photo booth, spooky maze, carnival food, cotton candy, face painting, balloon animals, fortune telling and a cupcake and cake walk.
Educators needed to screen films
Durango Independent Film Festival is seeking professional educators to be on the screening committee for its school program.
The committee will spend four hours on a Saturday or Sunday in November or December watching and evaluating possible films for the 2011 program.

Storyteller, songwriter to visit Miller
Miller Middle School will host storyteller and songwriter Bill Harley at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the school.
Harley will perform for the student body. After the assembly, he will work with sixth-graders about how to structure and perform their own stories.

b The Parent Teacher Organization will hold its annual Pumpkin Patch Fall Family Fun Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the school. There will be carnival games, Haunted Classrooms tours, cake walk and bouncy castle. The organization will be selling pumpkins.

Registration to open at community college
Southwest Colorado Community College will begin registering students for the spring semester Nov. 8.
The spring semester will run from Jan. 17 to May 7. New students may begin the application process online at www.EnrollSouth west.org or in person at The Commons building, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 201. Academic advisers are available to help students from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Financial aid may be available for eligible students.

Childhood council to meet in Cortez
The Montelores Early Childhood Council will meet at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 1 at the Church of Christ annex on the corner of Adams Street and Montezuma Avenue in Cortez.
The public is invited, and dinner will be provided. The council is made up of professionals and residents who wish to improve the lives and opportunities of children in Montezuma and Dolores counties.

b Two-Step & Swing Dance Basics with Leslie Carlson will be held Monday evenings from Nov. 1 to Dec. 13. The cost is $65 per person or $115 per couple for six classes.
b Discover Your Internet Niche, Part II with Doc Roberts will be held Tuesday evenings Nov. 2 and 9. The cost is $65 for two classes. Participants must have taken Discover Your Internet Niche, Part I. A laptop is required.

Grace academy to hold fundraiser
Grace Preparatory Academy will hold a dinner at 6 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road. A concert by Annie Brooks will held after the dinner.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will help provide tuition scholarships for students. The cost is $25 per person, and free baby-sitting will be provided.

A representative will be available to discuss the school and answer questions.
An information night also will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. Children are welcome, and there will be time for questions and answers.
