9-R school board announces events
b The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. Nov. 16 in the 9-R board room in the administration building.
b The board also will host an open house and reception for Kristy Rodri from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Rodri, who has worked in the district for 22 years, will retire Nov. 30.

Fort Lewis Mesa to hold Title I event
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will host a Title I parent night named Loving to Read and Loving to Learn! from 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 4 in the reading room.
Participants will learn strategies to help children get excited about reading; tips about listening to a child read; how to talk to a child about what he or she reads and more.
There will be free child care and refreshments.

Kindergartners at Needham to sing
Needham Elementary School kindergartners will share fall songs with parents and family today and Thursday in the music room.
The kindergartners also will wear costumes and visit the Four Corners Health Care Center at noon Friday.

Sunnyside to hold Halloween Carnival
Sunnyside Elementary School will hold its annual Halloween Carnival from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the school.
There will be game booths, a bouncy house, a haunted house, silent auction, a raffle and bingo. Local 4-H club members also will sell food in the cafeteria.

St. Pauls Lutheran Church and Preschool, across from Miller Middle School, will hold these programs:
b A carnival for preschool-age children will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church. There will be activities, face painting and more. Hot dogs, chips and cider will be available. The Durango Adult Education Center, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301, will hold these classes:
b Garden Inspiration: Review and Planning with Eve Gilmore of Gardens by Eve will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9. The class will discuss design ideas for next years garden. The cost is $20.
b A computer class about how to make pictures come to life will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 6 and 13. Participants will learn how to take still photos and turn them into a movie. The cost is $65.
b Google Use and Beyond will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 13. The cost is $35.

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County will hold Cradling Literacy Trainings: Building Teachers Skills to Nurture Early Language and Literacy from Birth to Five on these dates:

b Emergent Literacy in Two Languages and Strategies for Supporting Early Language and Literacy will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 22.
b The Powerful Role of Stories in Supporting Early Language & Literacy and Cultural Influences on Language and Literacy Teaching Practices will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 26.
b Using Language and Literacy in Guiding Childrens Behavior and Effective Teaching Strategies for Supporting Social-Emotional Literacy will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 26.

b At Spirit Week this week, students will celebrate each day with a different theme.
b There will be no school Friday because of staff professional development.
b Sign-up for Project Week will be held Thursday. Project Week allows teachers and students to explore scholastic-themed experiences outside the classroom during the first week of March. All projects focus on a particular topic or goal that will benefit Durango and the greater community.
Mountain Middle to hold fundraiser
Mountain Middle School, a free public school opening in August 2011, will host a fundraiser from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 4 upstairs at the Dalton Ranch Clubhouse.
The theme will be Ladies Night Out and will feature drinks and appetizers, a silent auction and shopping opportunities for jewelry, Arbonne products, Cabi clothes and more.

Fire strategy, tactics class to be held
Southwest Colorado Community College will offer a fire strategy and tactics class from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m Thursdays from Jan. 20 to May 5 at Upper Pine River Fire Station, 75 S. Clover Drive in Bayfield.
Students will study the principles of fire control through the use of personnel, equipment and extinguishing agents.
Registration for the class will begin Nov. 8. Interested students may begin the application process online at www.EnrollSouthwest.org or at the Southwest Colorado Community College, 701 Camino del Rio on the second floor.
