The Leadership Development Conference and 4-H Day at the state Capitol are in the final planning stages.
This annual event for senior-aged 4-H'ers will be held at the Denver Renaissance Hotel from Jan. 24 to 27.
Highlighting this year's conference banquet will be keynote speaker Gov. Bill Ritter and an IFYE preview by Kellie Lynn Martindale, who will be visiting La Plata County in February.
La Plata County delegates have until Friday to submit their registration forms along with the $30 registration fee. Our delegation will be driven up to Denver by either Gary or Reajean Riegel on Jan. 23 in order to be there when the conference begins Jan. 24. District 4-H Leader President Shirley Reinhardt also will be attending and will be representing La Plata County leaders at the last meeting of the Western Regional 4-H Leaders Forum steering committee, which is hosting the WRLF conference in Denver from Feb. 25 to March 1.
The purpose of the conference will be to develop team building, public speaking and leadership skills among our older 4-H members. In addition, there will be a 4-H Senate meeting where our local senators, Megan Semler and TJ Trump, and alternate, Lavonne Queen, will be able to voice their concerns. The delegates also will be joining with the United Methodist Women to create school kits as a statewide community-service project. These school kits will be used in relief efforts in the United States and internationally.
Both state Rep. Ellen Roberts and Sen. Jim Isgar will be invited as our guests to attend the annual 4-H Banquet on Jan. 24 to hear Ritter.
An added bonus this year is the opportunity to attend Colorado 4-H Night with the Denver Nuggets on Jan. 25 at the Pepsi Center. Tickets are available to any 4-H family that would like to attend this game against the Utah Jazz. The cost is $20 and includes a Club Level 4-H Room, a Courtside Experience and a Half-time Fan Tunnel. Order tickets by calling Nick Gray at (303) 405-6187. Hopefully, our San Juan Basin 4-H delegation also will have an opportunity to meet with either Roberts or Isgar on Jan. 26 before the Proclamation for Colorado 4-H Day on the floor of the Senate and House, which is always a highlight for our delegates.
Exchange delegate to speak
Our delegates will have an opportunity to hear Martindale, one of three 2008 International 4-H Youth Exchange delegates, who just returned from a six-month stay in Austria and Greece.
She is scheduled to visit La Plata County in February and will be speaking at our annual 4-H IFYE potluck dinner Feb. 17.
She also will be visiting area classrooms that week.
These IFYEs are usually 4-H alumni who are selected to represent Colorado in a foreign country. Both Erin Herrera and Robert Dobbins, La Plata County 4-H alumni, have been selected in the past.
