A Durango man has been arrested in connection with a downtown bar fight that resulted in another mans death.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. Nov. 21 outside The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
Ronald L. Gonzales, 51, died Nov. 24 in a Denver hospital. He was a father, self-employed plumber and handyman.
Ronald James RJ Mestas, 25, has been arrested on suspicion of felony assault. He was free Wednesday on $10,000 bail.
He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Formal charges had not yet been filed by the 6th Judicial District Attorneys Office.
The Durango Police Department is asking for the publics help in piecing together the events of the evening.
According to the arrest affidavit, Gonzales was at The Summit bar watching his cousin perform live music. An altercation occurred between Mestas and Gonzales, and Gonzales punched Mestas. The fight was broken up by family members and employees at The Summit.
Gonzales was escorted out of The Summit by a doorman. Mestas stayed in the bar for a short time and then followed Gonzales out of the bar, according to the arrest affidavit. Mestas confronted Gonzales and punched Gonzales in the face with his fist, the affidavit says.
Gonzales was immediately knocked unconscious and fell to the ground. As Gonzales fell to the ground, he hit his head on the concrete sidewalk and suffered a serious head injury.
He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center and then flown to St. Anthony hospital in Denver.
He did not regain consciousness. He was taken off a ventilator about 3 a.m. Nov. 24 and died at 4 p.m. Nov. 24, said Durango police Detective Joe Farmer.
