The Ignacio boys basketball team was turned back by San Juan High School of Blanding, Utah, on Saturday night in the championship game of the annual Webb Toyota Basin Tournament in Kirtland, N.M.
Playing in the tournament title game for the first time since 1984, the Bobcats fell 49-37 to San Juan.
Early on, we gave them a good game, Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez said.
The Bobcats led by one at the end of the first quarter.
But foul trouble and turnovers started to catch up to Ignacio in the second quarter.
An 8-2 run by San Juan put Ignacio down by six points at halftime.
Then we did not have one point in the third quarter, Valdez said. We missed probably four layups ... easy layups.
After trailing by as many as 18 points, the Bobcats cut the lead in the fourth quarter.
Valdez said Ignacio had 17 turnovers in the first half and 13 more in the second half.
And we missed so many shots, Valdez said.
They were big and thick, he said.
Pedro Vigil led the Bobcats with 10 points.
Ryan Brooks added six points and 10 rebounds along with five blocks in spite of foul trouble.
Shane Richmond pulled down 11 rebounds and scored six points for the Bobcats. Ignacio (2-1) upset host Kirtland Central 55-53 on Friday night.
Cameron Shumway, a 6-6 center, led San Juan with 18 points.
We learned a lot from this one, and well go on from here, Valdez said.
Ignacio will open its home season Friday against Dolores.
