Residents advocate for homeless campground

Some question establishing a site near social services
Lt. Ed Aber of the La Plata County Sheriff”s Office talks with Fritz on Friday. Fritz has been camping in the area north of the Durango Tech Center on county land for the past year and a half. According to Aber, there are about 40 people, some of whom are couples, camped at designated sites. Some residents want to see homeless campers moved to a permanent site that is safe and sanitary near Manna and other services.
Fritz’s campsite is tagged with an official name and number that the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office distributes to campers north of the Durango Tech Center.
Lora Sholes, left, Transitional Housing Program manager of Housing Solutions for the Southwest, and Elizabeth Salkind, executive director of Housing Solutions, have concerns about a site proposed for a homeless campground. The campground would share a cul-de-sac with Housing Solutions homes, including units for families and dorm-style housing for Durango Adult Education Center students. Salkind does not think the campground and housing are compatible. The site in question is visible to the left of Sholes and Salkind.
Jeremiah Jim, a Housing Solutions client living in the units for families and dorm-style housing for Durango Adult Education Center students, thinks there could be issues if a campground for homeless people is built nearby.
