Playing before a large and enthusiastic home crowd, the Bayfield High School boys basketball team powered past Bloomfield 69-43 on Saturday night.
We had a really good home crowd, and we played pretty well, BHS head coach Bill Hesford said.
We came our really fast and got a nice lead. Then we played a real deep bench, Hesford said.
The Bayfield pressure defense paid off early, he said.
Derek Hillyer, Bayfields 6-9 junior, led all scorers with 19 points. He also had eight rebounds as the Wolverines improved to 4-1.
Seth Roubideaux, in his first game this season, added 13 points and a half-dozen assists, Hesford said.
It was good to have him back out there, Hesford said of the senior guard.
John Cusick handled the ball really well (Saturday night), Hesford said.
Cusick, a senior replacing a senior in Ryan Terry at the point, also scored six points.
Seth Posey, the Wolverines 6-5 junior power forward, had six pionts and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Eirik Kinns had seven points in about four minutes, Hesford said of the first-time varsity player.
Our younger guys are looking good, he said, adding that the level of play slipped a bit in the second and fourth quarters.
We fouled (too much) at the end. We need to let the clock do its work sometimes, Hesford said.
Bloomfield fell to 1-3 with Saturdays loss.
The Bayfield boys basketball team will be back in action Thursday at Piedra Vista for a 7 p.m. game in Farmington.
Piedra Vista beat Durango 61-44 on Saturday night in Farmington.
