Kudos to the Durango City Council, city staff and Fort Lewis College for making the new community multi-use field complex on FLC campus a reality (City gets grant for sports complex, Herald, Dec. 10). In addition to serving local athletes, the complex will play host to numerous regional tournaments that will significantly boost the adjacent downtown Durango economy.
In particular, appreciation and congratulations are due former Durango Mayor Leigh Meigs, who developed the idea for the complex and the city-college partnership that makes it possible. Meigs proposed the idea to the community in an opinion piece (Herald, June 14, 2009) and tirelessly championed the concept in the months that followed.
Durango has numerous parks and recreation facilities named for local male public servants. Its time we named a facility for one of our many esteemed and dedicated local women. Because the complex would not exist if not for Meigs foresight and hard work, and because of the many years of tremendous public service Meigs has provided our community as a city councilor and magistrate, I encourage the City Council to consider naming the new complex Meigs Multi-Use Fields at FLC.
