Wrestling against perhaps some of the best competition this side of the state tournament, Durango High Schools Rudy Peterson and Trevor Gillen stood tall on Day 1 of the Warrior Classic on Friday in Grand Junction, capturing a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals.
Still alive for the Demons in wrestlebacks are Donald Kirby at 130 pounds, Gabe Crawford at 145 and Elliott Salazar at 152.
For Peterson, the opening day at Mesa State College was just another example of his early season dominance at 112 pounds. The senior notched a pair of first-period pins to run his record to 12-0 with 12 pinfalls.
He wrestled a total of two minutes (Friday) in two matches, both first-period pins, DHS head coach Doug Cuddie said.
Were hoping hell run into someone who can push him for six minutes to get him in shape, Cuddie said jokingly.
Gillen, a heavyweight, is on a pretty strong tear of his own lately, and his two victories Friday pushed his record to 13-1 on the season.
Cuddie credits Gillens success thus far to his ability to come up with a strategy and stick to it throughout the entire match.
Hes got a game plan and sticks to it thats the nice thing about Trevor, Cuddie said.
