Trevor Gillen continues to turn heads in dominating fashion.
The Durango High School senior heavyweight pushed his record to 16-1 by sweeping his way to a title at the Warrior Classic on Saturday in Grand Junction against some of the best talent Colorado and its surrounding states have to offer.
Gillen topped Pueblo Easts Patrick Smith in the final.
He beat a big kid, and he probably gave up four inches in size and at least 20 pounds in weight, DHS head coach Doug Cuddie said.
At 119 pounds, senior Rudy Peterson fell just short of joining Gillen as champion.
Frank Vigil of Air Academy used a late takedown to snatch the lead and top the previously unbeaten Peterson by three points.
It was a real good showing and a kid well see maybe three times again this year, Cuddie said about Petersons run, which included his 13th pin of the season Saturday.
Elliott Salazar (152 pounds) finished the weekend 2-2, and Donald Kirby (130) finished 3-2. Gabe Crawford (145) ended up 1-2.
We ended December 6-1 in dual meets, and thats nice, but again, Februarys the key, Cuddie said about Durangos goals going forward.
