With human-bruin conflicts rising, a new tactic to deter home break-ins
Jim Sims builds his “unwelcome mats” for bears Wednesday at his home in Durango. The mats are constructed with carpet tack strips. The tacks stick out of the wood about a three-eighths of an inch. The mats are designed to deter bears from entering homes but not injure them.
So far, Jim Sims has built eight “unwelcome mats.” Bryan Peterson of Bear Smart Durango would like to hand out the mats to homeowners concerned about bear break-ins.
