In the tournament that bares its coachs name, the Bayfield High School wrestling team put on quite the show Saturday.
The Wolverines, despite missing two regulars, finished third at the Herb Stinson Challenge in Piedra Vista, topping Valencia (N.M.) 42-39 in the third-place dual.
(I was) very pleased with our showing, Stinson said. I actually felt like we got football out of our system as far as shape wise and got wrestling into it.
To advance out of Pool D, BHS topped Blanding (Utah) 56-24 and Dolores 61-18.
Without usual 145-pounder Sonny Salazar and 112-pounder Cameron Shablo, Bayfield fell just short against eventual champions Bloomfield in the semifinal 35-29 before rebounding to clip Valencia.
Bloomfield beat Piedra Vista in the final.
I really think if we had a couple other kids in the lineup, with a (six)-point loss to Bloomfield, I know we wouldve beat them, Stinson said.
Five Wolverines had perfect 4-0 marks Saturday: Austin Shupe (119 pounds), Tanner McGhehey (152), Aaron Velasquez (160), Jon Roberts (171) and Max Arras (215). McGhehey, Velasquez and Roberts earned all-tournament honors as well.
We had a couple of them step up, said Stinson, who coached in Northwest N.M. for several years before moving to Bayfield.
