Another day, another piece added to the learning curve for the Durango High School boys basketball team.
The Demons had a rough patch late in the second quarter, and Coronado maintained a solid margin the rest of the way for a 71-52 win over DHS on Saturday, the final day of the Pueblo East Tournament and the Demons 2010 finale.
Weve got a lot of work to do, so weve just got to keep working hard in practice, Durango head coach Alan Batiste said. It starts in practice for us. If we dont push each other in practice, then were not used to what we see in a game because we dont push each other in practice.
Coronado built the lead over DHS (2-6) to 15 with a late run before the half and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Gustavo Zavala led DHS with 12 points, and junior forward Joe Keresey had 10.
Despite going 0-3 on the weekend, Batiste said his team learned some invaluable lessons heading into the holiday break, particularly in terms of being more patient and finding ways to dig out of early holes.
Were a young team finding out all the factors we need to be successful, Batiste said. (Saturday), being that we started the game at 10 a.m., we needed to mentally prep for that first half, but it just wasnt there.
Durango will open its home schedule Jan. 4 against Bloomfield after the holiday break.
